Jembatan Tiga toll road resumes operation

By Mustaqim Adamrah

The Jembatan Tiga toll road, part of the Ir. Wiyoto Wiyono MSc. toll road, North Jakarta, reopened early Monday morning after infrastructure was damaged in a fire last year.

PT Citra Marga Nusaphala Persada (CMNP), the toll road operator, says the toll road, which provides an access to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang and the Tanjung Priok port in North Jakarta, is now safe for vehicles after being repaired for over three months.

"The toll road has been fully operational since 12 p.m. Monday," CMNP service and maintenance division head Bagus Meidi Suarso told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

"Cars and buses, as well as big and small trucks can now safely use the toll road, which has three lanes in each direction like before."

In the fire, the toll road's pylons were severely damaged, while an office building belonging to state toll road operator PT Jasa Marga and the nearby tollgate were destroyed.

Despite fully operating, small-scale works, like road markings, drainage system installation, expansion joint work and street mopping-up operation, are still underway, CMNP said in a release.

All the works are expected to be completed by Saturday, the release said.

"We'll work on road markings over the next three or four days and wait for the asphalt to set," Bagus said.

In the meantime, CMNP toll road users will find markings to guide them during their travels, he said.

"We'll also clean up the area under the expressway. The works will not disturb traffic," he said.

The repair work started on March 19 and was initially scheduled for completion in the third week of July, said Bagus.

"But we managed to finish sooner. We saved around 15 days by improving the quality of concrete we used for the construction," Bagus said.

The work comprised repairs of, among others, 140-meter long structures and the Jembatan Tiga 1 tollgate, CMNP said.

In addition to damaged structures, the blaze also razed over 200 plywood houses and left more than 500 people homeless.

North Jakarta fire department reported that the blaze began when a kerosene cooking stove exploded. [The Jakarta Post]
