Rp 200m missing from ATM

By Indah Setiawati

A Bank Mandiri automatic teller machine (ATM) located in Permata Puri Cimanggis, Depok, was robbed over the weekend, causing losses estimated at nearly Rp 200 million (US$21,200), a police report said Wednesday.

"We are still investigating the case. We hope to find the perpetrator soon," Depok Police detective Comr. Rochimat said.

The robbery took place last Saturday but PT Universal Security did not report it to Depok Police until Tuesday.

Rochimat said police had not named any suspect in the robbery.

Police questioned four people present during a cash replenishment who observed an empty till in the ATM which should have held a stack of banknotes.

The police report said Salman, an employee, had handed a refill container of money to his colleague M. Iqbal, who installed it into the back of the ATM. After Iqbal had installed the replenished till he had the ATM print out a transaction receipt.

After Iqbal finished installing the new till, Bahtiar, another employee, saw something was amiss with the ATM. He and his colleague Fikri then checked the machine and the containers inside it.

The employees said one till, which was supposed to have banknotes worth Rp 199.9 million according to an accounting they had, was empty.

Depok Police are still investigating the case.

In another incident, a mugging was reported in Senen, Central Jakarta.

Ecky Russei, a 23-year-old college student on his way to Cempaka Putih, boarded a minibus at the Senen bus station. When the bus arrived on Jl. Soeprapto, three men boarded the bus and approached him.

One of them pointed a knife at Ecky's stomach, while another man said, "If he tries to fight, just stab him!" The other man groped into his pocket and took his cell phone. They three ran off but a police officer caught the man with the knife.

"A police officer who was inspecting buses saw the mugging and arrested one of them. We're still trying to catch the other two," the Senen Police crime unit head, First Insp. Aryono, told The Jakarta Post.

He said the detainee, Nofrijon, was currently under police custody and was charged with violating Article 365 of the Criminal Code. According to the article, the suspect could face up to 12 years in prison.

Aryono said Senen Police were organizing a sweep to clean the area of petty thieves who were usually more active during the month of Ramadan.

"We have arrested 25 culprits so far, most of them were loitering at the Senen sports stadium or at our bus and train stations," he said, adding the sweep was only conducted during the fasting month. [The Jakarta Post]
