Jakarta's property management and control agency will question next week nine parking structure owners whose facilities do not comply with safety regulations.

Agency head Hari Sasongko said the parking lots' walls did not meet the safety standard. Some had separator walls less than 1 meter high, some lacked separator walls altogether.

The revised agency regulation on structural and geotechnical planning for buildings, which will be put in a gubernatorial decree, stipulates separator walls be at least 1 meter high.

"We will ask the owners to repair the parking facilities within three months or one month at the most where necessary. If they can't repair their buildings soon, we will seal them," Hari said.

Hari said his agency had distributed the revised regulation to all parking structure owners.

"Other owners have evaluated their structures and quickly modified them in accordance with the regulation," he said.

A series of accidents involving falling cars has led the agency to inspect multistory parking structures across the capital.

There were two car accidents at Permata Hijau International Trade Center's parking facility last year. A family of three was killed when their vehicle fell from the sixth floor of the car park.

The second accident occurred when a driver lost control of the car and rolled it backwards, smashing through a 1-meter-high wall of a spiral ramp.

In January, a 42-year-old chauffeur was killed in a fall after he backed his car through a steel fence at the Menara Jamsostek building, South Jakarta.
