City announces more unsafe parking buildings
The city property management agency has found that nine parking structures in Jakarta are in violation of safety standards, an official said Tuesday.
The agency earlier declared another eight parking structures failed to meet safety standards.
Agency head Hari Sasongko said Tuesday the nine buildings were found in violation for a variety of reasons, including structural faults and inadequate signage.
"The agency found nine unsafe parking buildings after surveying 194 buildings in Jakarta," Hari said in a statement signed April 10. Seven of the nine are located in Central Jakarta, he added.
Between January and March, the agency inspected 194 parking structures, including 140 structures which were subjected to structural analysis.
Hari added that the remaining 54 structures would also undergo structural analysis.
He said 94 of the 140 structures were deemed safe, while 37 are still under construction.
"The agency has ordered the developers of those 37 parking buildings to comply with a 2007 agency decree (on structural safety)," he said.
The agency has given the management of the unsafe parking structures a month to submit designs for the necessary renovations to meet safety standards.
It addressed a similar request to the management of buildings found safe, said Hari.
These buildings must be made to comply with a 2007 agency regulation on building structures and geotechnology planning.
The regulation includes a requirement that walls in parking structures be strong enough to withstand collisions.
According to Hari, of the nine unsafe buildings, only PT Wisata Citra Legian had submitted proposed renovations to the agency.
Earlier, the agency found eight of 22 inspected parking structures unsafe. The inspections were carried out between Jan. 25 and 30.
Most of the parking structures were located in shopping centers, including Senayan City and International Trade Center Cempaka Mas, both in Central Jakarta, and Plaza Semanggi and Pasaraya Grande, both in South Jakarta.
According to the agency, of the eight buildings, seven have submitted renovation plans but only one has been approved by an agency-appointed team in charge of building construction.
The agency aims to inspect 306 parking structures in total.
The inspections are being carried out after several accidents involving cars driving off parking structures.
